about
Picture a leaf carried away on a stream. Racing across eddies, rapids, white foam and water singing as it slides across stones.
Then slowing, perhaps as the stream begins to deepen and widen. The leaf floats freely and without aim. At times caught in a more active current, at times more languid. Far above, clouds meander across the sky. Who can say what sights they see?
“Drift” is perhaps a refraction of such images. The music marks the beginning of a journey, just as it alludes to moments to come later in the album.
The arrangement is simple, in fitting contrast to a relatively intricate composition. As the song moves through different themes and melodies it evokes atmospheres of tension and mystery, crowned by a certain kind of elation. Roots in shadow but tending toward light, like so much of this album.
Perhaps, then, “Drift” is an invitation to hypnogogia, that curious space between sleep and waking where images come unbidden and mind sheds the rigid linearity of waking consciousness. Given that it opens the album, we can wonder whether the remaining tracks are each moments captured from dreams.
I originally intended to run a second track of the same guitar but shifted down an octave to create a sense of weight to the composition. In the end it seemed better to distil the mix down to the barest elements.
My favourite discoveries on Bandcamp are those albums I didn't know I needed. Beautiful, meditative music carrying the spirit of both epic and doom metal. I am reminded of Pagan Altar as well as the acoustic pieces in Lord Vicar's discography. Cathartic! Sojourner
