Goddess of Night Song Notes: Track Four “Have Faith Willow Tree”

For me, the music for a song often arrives years ahead of the lyrics. I think this makes for better compositions, though it can be frustrating. Sometimes it allows for interesting songwriting stories. “Have Faith Willow Tree” exemplifies this case.

First though, to discuss the track as a whole. A more pastoral, warmer spirit, less of the angst that haunts the first three songs of the album. I think the psych/folk influences are self-evident, and I had a lot of fun working out the chamberlin arrangements. The tempo and harmonic changes give the song a sense of expansion and contraction. It breathes.

I’m particularly proud of the last part of the song, starting with the lyric “grow and become whole,” and leading into the final unresolved cadences. I believe a composer should spend more time on the ending than on any other part of a song. For me, the ending of “Have Faith Willow Tree” conjures a pathos of elation and loss. The sound of flowing water coming back in nicely supports that emotional texture.

Arranging this song was a little challenging. It needed to be fairly minimal, to break the mold of bass/drums/guitars. Mixing the vocals was particularly tricky, and I’m not ashamed to say that Taylor Swift’s album Folklore helped me understand what I was looking for (thanks for the tip, Dan). Not especially enamored of the lyrics, but the arrangements and production on that album are magnificent.

Well, I can at least own the conceit that I prefer my lyrics to those of Swift. About 4 or 5 years ago – the music already long composed and completed – I did a rune reading for a friend. I’ve been reading runes for my whole adult life and have my own idiosyncratic style. That reading felt like a precious exchange of ideas and images with someone I respect immensely.

I felt the reading echo in the days that followed. The words formed themselves into verse and the song was finally done. It is a song about trusting one’s creative spirit despite doubt, fear, and hurt. As I write this, I realize there was a parallel between the message the runes had for my friend and the process of creating this song. Both illustrate the power of embracing trust in unknown, inner guidance.

lyrics

There is a willow of graceful limb
Dancing by the river's edge.
Hesitant, yet compelled from within
By a sap-filled heart that sings:

Songs of sadness, fear, and pain
Songs of laughter, joy, and play
Songs that vibrate from root to branch
And drift away
Forever
On the river

Perch on the water's edge
And have faith, willow tree:
The earth wants you here.
Sink roots into fertile soil
Drink deep the life
Pulsing through this earthly coil

Bide your time
Heed your inner counsel
Inside is a shining seed
Waiting to grow

Grow and become whole
You're not condemned to be alone
Sink your roots deep into soil and stone
The world needs your wise dancing soul
